Amanda Covington Byrd, 94, of Hamlet passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 17, 2024. She was born November 26, 1929, in Rockingham, NC, a daughter of the late Charlie and Roberta Gibson Covington.
Amanda often spoke proudly of her farm upbringing with her sister and brother in the Roberdel Community of Rockingham, NC. She graduated from Rockingham High School in 1947. After graduation she began a lengthy career in banking in Richmond County starting with Richmond County Bank and then retiring from BB&T.
Amanda married Curtis Byrd in 1955. Together they raised three children and were devoted to family, church, and their community. Her greatest joy was her devotion to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hamlet, NC where she served and participated in many activities. In her later years she enjoyed gardening, sewing, and traveling with her husband. She also had a passion for collecting cardinal and angel figurines.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Mary Hunter Covington.
Amanda is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 68 years, R. Curtis Byrd and her children, Amanda Carol Byrd of Mathews, NC, Richard Curtis Byrd., Jr. (Kelly) of Lexington, NC and Charles Michael Byrd (Lisa) of Raleigh, NC; Grandchildren, Hayley Phillips (Tyler) of Cornelius, NC, Emory Byrd (Fiancé - Will McAllister) of Lexington, KY, Kyle Byrd (Eric Caver) of Hubert, NC, Casey Byrd of Clayton, NC, Anna Grace Evans of Raleigh, NC and Adam Evans of Smithfield, NC; One great grandchild, Reese Phillips; A brother Glenn Covington (Ursula) of Rockingham, NC. She is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 22, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home Chapel in Hamlet with Rev. Dan Blair officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet prior to the funeral service.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 300 Charlotte Street, Hamlet, NC 28345.
